Dental curing lights are a mainstay of dentistry today. Procedures such as cavity restorations, porcelain veneers and orthodontic bonding all rely on polymerization of monomers, which is commonly achieved with light activation. Acids, solvents, and different monomers all present the possibility of physical and biological side effects for patients and dental personnel. In particular, dental curing lights, which emit blue light, can be harmful to the operators’ eyesight

According to the American Dental Association, nearly 150 million resin-based restorations and sealants are placed every year. Almost all of these use light-cured resin-based composites. Thus, a light-curing device is now commonly found in dental practices across the country. Some assume that a “point and shoot” technique is sufficient. However, in order to achieve optimal results, dental curing lights must be used correctly. Read on to find out more about how to use a dental curing light so that the resin-based restorations you place in patients’ mouths will be as successful as manufacturers’ claims.

When dentists or any member of a dental team uses dental curing lights, protective eyewear or a shield to cover the light-curing unit (LCU) is a must. Ophthalmic research shows that short wavelength light like that commonly used in dental curing lights may contribute to premature aging of the eye’s retina and to senile macular degeneration. The Orbiter® allows dental professionals to cure resin-based composite restorations and sealants in a manner that provides safety for your eyes and convenient treatment.
